Here are Things You Should be Mindful of When You Go For a Dialysis Treatment

It is startling to note that almost 850 million people in the world are suffering from kidney diseases worldwide. Now, that is not a small number if you sit down and contemplate on it. These numbers are not less in our beautiful country of Kenya. Almost one person in every ten has kidney problem. A lot of people are searching for the best dialysis centre that can provide quality dialysis.

If you did observe, there is a steep rise in the number of dialysis centres in Nairobi. It is crucial for you to take care of your body if you want to live longer and healthy. Your kidneys are one of the most crucial organs in your body as they help to eliminate excess fluids, wastes, as well as toxins from your body. Now, this can cause the condition ‘kidney failure.’ When this happens, your kidney will no more work in eliminating the urine, wastes, water and excess fluids in your body.

The only way to treat this condition is by getting dialysis every alternate day. But, when you go for dialysis treatment, you need to keep in mind certain aspects. You need to take care of yourself and be mindful of many things. One must take care of the following personally to help clinicians give you their best.

Mindful of  Your Fistula Arm

Sometimes, nurses or doctors might forget your fistula arm and try to give injections or place the BP cuff on it. You need to immediately inform them about it so that they can place it on the other hand. If you are silent knowing this, it can cause some serious problems.

Access to the blood vessels is going to fail. Hence, do not allow anyone to touch it unless they are doing dialysis. You should refrain them from taking blood as well from the veins of the hands that have a fistula. Allow them to do these things on the other hand.

Going to Ultrasound Scan – Drink Less Water

People who are on dialysis need to undergo an ultrasound scan for various reasons. Some of the nurses and technicians who perform this test recommend the patients to drink a lot of water. Sometimes, the recommended amount is somewhere between one to one and a half litres of water. They want the bladder to be full before they do the scan.

It is crucial for you to know that this is something that you should avoid doing. No matter how much water you are going to drink, your bladder is never going to become full. It is because your kidneys are not working well. You might need to explain this thing to the technician or the nurse in charge of this test if they recommend you to drink water.

Injection of the Contrast Dyes

Before doing certain scans, the technicians or nurses who are in charge of these tests are supposed to inject in your body contrast dyes. You need to speak with your nephrologist before getting this injection into your body. You should mainly check if the dye is safe to use and does not cause any adverse effect on your body.

Some dyes are safe and secure. It is okay to use them. In some cases, where you do not have an option, you should plan on getting a dialysis session immediately after that particular scan is complete. Now, this is the only way, you can effectively remove the contrast dye from your body.

Speak with the nephrologist at one of the dialysis centres in Nairobi to learn more about the do’s and don’ts when you go for dialysis treatment. It is the only way you can safeguard or protect yourself.
